Surf Photos – W swell from last Thursday

The W swell last week did some cool stuff…and I am still getting lots of pictures from you guys (please send them over…I love surf photos).

Anyway here are a few cool ones for our prone brethren…some silly dumpy barrels on that W swell. (Photos taken 10/15)

Check out the almond shaped barrel at the end…the section is like 3’ high but the whitewash is 8’…crazy

Seal sucks? LOL. I've got news for you, all of OC sucks. Sure, it was great today, but the odds of getting a combo s/n swell + good winds + good tides is practically nil. OC gets its one moment in the spotlight which is Oct.

The bottom line is that the winds kill it. The surfing day is reduced to 2-4 hrs MAX. Places like Santa Cruz, SB/Ventura, LA county (both north & south ie PV), SD and Baja (weep for what was) allow surfers to practically surf anytime they choose during daylight hours.

That means waiting for the tide or any other host of conditions that make surfing a blast. It means being able to get shit done, then hitting late afternoon low tides (hint: Rincon).

Seriously, if you're not a teenager or working family man, there is absolutely no reason to be surfing here. There's a reason there are so many OTCs (Orange County townies) - they might look like they surf, but it's only appearances.

If you've got any gumption, check out SC - hands down the best surf on the West coast, excepting a short stretch of coastline by, ahem, Gaviota.

been to santa cruz plenty and never was very impressed. the stretch of coastline between la jolla and trestles is probably the most diverse waves. opening up the most possibilities as far as conditions and and swell fetch goes. when the waves are down in one spot you can do a little morning cruise and find it elsewhere. but i will admit the ranch is to die for when there's any swell

I've got news for you - Trestles is in SD county. Just because Surfline lists it in OC doesn't make it so.

As for RJs, et al, jeez, all of my neighbors grew up surfing there as kids. Now they're grown up and own houses in SE HB. But because it's so awesome they surf n side these days - it's also why Carlson was at n side all last week during that epic run of surf.

Comments from people like you convince me that OC surfers simply do not have any clue what good waves are really like. It's not your fault - you just don't know.

Do yourself a favor and go to school in SC, SB, Ventura or San Diego. You'll get a taste of what it's like to be able to surf back-lit waves that wrap and peel.

If you want to surf a beach break first thing in the am, you can hit Moss, Oxnard, Blacks, etc, then go to a point in the afternoon.

Riddle me this: why doesn't the only WCTer from HB surf here? Because Reyes hates it, that's why. No one in their right mind who is focused on surfing would ever live/surf here - life is too short to be wasted on crap.

When it's time to settle down, then move back & buy a house. The schools are great, the family atmosphere is unsurpassed, and every now and then you can sneak in a great session (like today).

Here are some links to what world class breaks look like. Yes, California has quite a number of great breaks - they're just not in OC:

Rincon

The Lane

Swamis

Re Trestles <-> SD. For sure it's one of the 4 best stretches of surf in Calif. It's why people live in San Clemente - the best summer break + it's just a short hop down to n SD county in winter.

Any wonder why traveling pros make SC home? The list is endless.

The other great stretches are Moss <-> 4 mile, SB <-> Oxnard, and of course, the Ranch. For bonus consideration, I would add BM <-> San Miguel (weep).

Seriously, no joke, if you're out of high school and not yet settled into a career/job, get the hell out of OC and go somewhere else. School is the obvious ticket - don't be a schmuck and become just another OCT (Orange County townie).
