Monday’s Slop – More wind and junky swell

Monday does not look like a surf day.

We are going to have mix of fading WNW-NW swell from the weekend, building local WNW windswell, and some background SW energy. The windswell looks pretty hacked up with most of the energy in the 5-6 second range (which is getting almost to short to surf) and the longer-period swells are getting pretty weak…so the combo of the sloppy/weird swell mix and onshore winds isn’t going to be doing our surf any favors. The CDIP forecast makes it look better than it is going to be.



Sizewise the average spots can expect surf in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent chest high+ sets on the lower tides. Standout NW facing breaks, mostly in the well exposed areas of Southern SD, will have surf more in the chest-head high range with some overhead sets still mixing in at times. Surf shape is going to be pretty poor…onshore chop and funky swell periods will keep things from ever being very surfable.

Wind looks poor on Monday. W winds 10-20 knots will be on tap for the morning…strongest from LA up through Santa Barbara and a little lighter in OC/SD. Winds are expected to increase…15-25 knots for the afternoon. Unfortunately there are not many places to hide from the W winds.



If the wind lives up to forecasts, and the rain that they have in there comes through, then I think tomorrow is going to pretty much be a write off. If we have a shot at surf it will be early in the morning…but I wouldn’t waste any gas checking it…just check out the winds and if they are anywhere out of the West then go back to bed.

No regional forecasts this afternoon…I am pretty much counting on it being sucktacular tomorrow.

Surf for Tuesday – poo patrol with more wind

Surf for Tuesday – Great more wind

Tuesday is not looking like much of a surf day…onshore winds and poor water quality will definitely be working to hamper conditions.

Swellwise things pick up a bit more as the combo of W-WNW storm/wind swell (270-300) picks up a bit and mixes with the neverending (yet never helpful) touch of SW energy.



Most spots will be in the chest high range on Tuesday…with some chest-shoulder high surf showing at the better W-WNW facing breaks. Top NW facing spots, like those in San Diego, will be in the chest-head high range fairly consistently with some bigger sets mixing in at times.

Winds just suck on Tuesday…the storm front that brought the rain on Monday will be moving out but the NW winds that follow these types of storms will be right on its tail. Look for NW winds 10-15+ knots on tap for the morning…strongest in the Northerly Counties. Look for these winds to hold through midday and then slowly taper off toward the evening.



With the winds and water (poo) quality on tap for Tuesday I would probably give the building wave heights a pass. I might give the beach a quick check if the winds look like they have done something unexpected overnight, and just to see how things weathered the rain, but it would have to look really, really, good to get me into the lineup and I don’t see that happening tomorrow.

Monday’s Surf – This sucks

Monday is not going to be much of a surf day.

A new cold front, rain, and increasing onshore winds are forecast to move in later tonight. About the only thing that this storm will be good for (besides sending in some more snow) is building up the wave heights slightly. At this point we can expect slowly increasing W windswell (with crap 5-7 second swell periods…seriously I can’t believe I am even talking about this) building our nearly flat surf to an outstanding chest high at the top San Diego/Ventura spots by tomorrow afternoon.

Before we get too excited remember that onshore winds out of the W will be on tap 10-15 knots for the morning and then cap out around 20-25 knots by the afternoon. Showers are likely throughout the day. Check out the COAMPS forecast for tomorrow



Your best bet is to stay in bed tomorrow, maybe read the paper, or have some donuts. You might give the cams a quick check just in case we get lucky and the front stalls out enough to send in a couple of chilly dawn patrol waves before junky it out…but don’t hold your breath.

I don't know about the rest of you but I am sooo over this tiny surf...It is getting to the point that I am seriously considering that a human sacrafice might be the way to go. Or maybe we just need to have a coordinated "lackosurf" party...it seems like the surf has a tendency to be better when you are hungover...maybe if enough of us are at the same time we can lift the wave curse...maybe the day after Christmas is a good target?
