Monday’s Surf – a slow pickup but still funky

Monday will see a slow increase in wave heights but it still won’t be big enough or consistent enough to really be a surf day.

We are going to have a mix of small S-SSW swell (180-190), some inconsistent SW swell (210-220), and some local NW windswell.

Most spots will be around knee-high+ off the mix of S swell and windswell. The top S facing breaks will see more consistent waist high+ sets…and maybe a rare chest high+ plus wave…on the lower tides. Really though it is going to feel pretty small, mostly gutless, and inconsistent…all of which is going to make for sucky surf.

Winds are going to be sort of blah…there will be some slight eddy circulation early, which means mild onshore flow out of the SW. It will be cleaner through areas that have high cliffs, lots of kelp, or some sort of structure to block the wind. Expect winds to shift to more W-SW flow by midday and then turn more WNW 10-14 knots by the afternoon.

Personally I don’t think that Monday’s surf is looking all that fun…the mix of conditions and swell aren’t really going to click…and there just isn’t enough swell to power through the texture and the higher morning tide. If you have the day off, or just have to surf…I would recommend bringing the small wave gear…longboards will probably be the most fun. Look for the biggest surf through the combo spots of San Diego, but even at those breaks it won’t be worth driving very far.

Surf for Thursday – Nothing Special

Thursday is looking a bit blah...rideable but nothing all that fun.

The little inconsistent pulse of SW swell that hit on Wednesday will be fading slowly on Thursday. NW windswell will continue to hold in the background. The eddy conditions will be continuing as well...so the texture/funk will still be hanging around.

Surf will be in the knee-waist high range for most spots. Top breaks will have some chest and inconsistent shoulder high sets. It will be long-waits between sets...so bring a book or something.

The eddy hangs around on Thursday...with S winds around 5-8 knots for the morning and W winds around 10-14 knots on tap for the afternoon.

The most consistent size will be around SD and South OC...but neither region will be worth driving much for. Generally we can expect lumpy soft windswell peaks with an occasional SW line that rolls through and crosses things up. I would still stick to the smaller wave gear to get through the waits between sets...personally I would give the cams a check in the morning before wasting too much gas.

Surf for Monday – Leftovers and some little storm

Monday isn’t looking like much of a surf day.

We are going to see a mix of leftover WNW energy, some local windswell, and some inconsistent and slightly shadowed SW swell.

On average most spots will be in the knee-waist high range…with a bit of burger shape as we hit the morning high tide. The top combo spots…really just Northern San Diego and South OC…will have some chest and maybe even shoulder high waves. Sets will be pretty inconsistent and the tide swampiness is going to affect it as well.

Winds and weather don’t look stellar either (Debbie Downer!)…we have a bit of a cold front moving through the area and while it isn’t expected to blow things out it probably won’t make it super clean either. Basically I am expecting some variable winds, cleanest in the early morning. The variable turns onshore and increases to about 10-12 knots for the afternoon. There will be a chance at showers throughout the day as well.

I think that if you haven’t gotten waves for a few days that it might be worth at least checking the cams in the morning…if conditions have held together, and your local spot isn’t having too many swell direction or tide issues…then try and grab a few (it is never good to leave a peak unridden if you don’t have too). I wouldn’t expect much from it but at least you might be able to snag a section or two.

Here are the tides.
