Adam’s Long-Range Forecast - Small Southern Hemi mix and tiny windswell combo up as we head into the weekend.

Adam’s Long-Range Forecast - Small Southern Hemi mix and tiny windswell combo up as we head into the weekend. New S-SW swells start to increase size and consistency next week and we can expect some decent sized waves finally arriving by the following weekend…and likely holding almost all the way through the end of August. Oh and it is Friday the 13th today...so take things a little easy and see if you can dodge the bad-luck-dolphin.

Short Range (next 4 days)

Friday (the 13th…watch out for those dolphins)
A mix of overlapping S-SW swells (180-220) and some minor windswell will be on tap throughout Friday. The swell mix actually gets a little bit of a reinforcement, but it is on the tailing.....read the full forecast

Random video – Holly Beck – South Bay dawn patrolling

Ran across this video while doing some work this morning…and while it isn’t super crazy or anything it is a pretty good use of the board-mounted camera and a good way to waste a few minutes. Oh and around the 2:40 mark you can see my mortal enemies stalking Holly in the background. (no means no flipper.)

Waves for the Weekend – On the quiet side

Both Saturday and Sunday will be rideable but our surf will be on the small side.

We are going to have a mix of SW swell and WNW-NW windswell energy...both of which will be backing down as we move through Saturday into Sunday. Check out the sideways forecast model...I think it sums it up the best.

Over the weekend wave heights will be in the knee-to-inconsistent-waist high range for most exposed spots. The standout combo spots, mostly through San Diego, will have a few chest high sets...and maybe a couple of rare bigger ones on the lower tides. Overall it will be soft and slow...with longer waits between waves.

Winds look good...clean in the mornings with just light/variable to very light S-SE flow early. Afternoons will have W winds around 10-13 knots...with some potential clean up occurring around sundown as the slight eddy tries to reset itself.

I would plan on using the smaller wave gear over the weekend...the lack of swell, the inconsistency in the sets, and the higher tides will make things a little frustrating...if you can catch more of the smaller sets you will probably have more fun. Try and stick to the best combo spots if can...there will just be a bit more to work with in those areas.

Have a good one...I am off to take my soon-to-be 4 year old to have brunch with Shamu for his birthday...but considering my history with marine mammals I can tell this is going to end badly for me.

No means no Shamu....

Here are the tides...

Waves for the weekend - Fun surf but expect the crowd

We will have some fun surf over the weekend with both Saturday and Sunday being decent surf days.

Over the next couple of days we will have a mix of fading S swell, some SW energy, and a continued blend of WNW-NW windswell from our local waters.

Look for most exposed spots to hold in the waist-chest high range. Standout S-SW facing spots and good combo breaks will see some chest-shoulder high sets...and possibly a couple of very inconsistent bigger sets on the lower tides.

Winds will be fairly clean in the morning with light/variable to light SW texture at some of the more open beaches. All spots will have onshore winds out of the W-NW around 10-14 knots by the afternoon.

San Diego and Orange County will have the biggest waves over the weekend but thanks to the slightly more S-SW swell direction (as opposed to SE) the surf will show about the same size at most of the top breaks in both counties. I would still expect a little more consistency around South OC and North San Diego but I don’t think an extra couple of waves will make a longer drive worth it.

It is supposed to be pretty hot inland this weekend (and nice along the beach as well) so I am expecting the crowd to be pretty silly...sort of like hands across America in some spots. Personally I think that it might be worth checking the bigger beach breaks for at least a chance at a little breathing room.

A little more dolphin love

So if you have been reading the blog over the last several posts you might have caught my near molestation by dolphins. Well they were back again today…about 12-15 of them…and no shit they were completely burning my buddy and I while we were surfing. I must have got dropped in on by flipper 2-3 times and same with my friend. Then to add insult to the burn they would come back and squeak at us (probably talking dolphin smack on how slow we swim). I guess they were pissed at my post or maybe I dress too seductively when I surf. Probably, what is more likely, is that my paddling/surfing style is so bad that the dolphins think I am in distress and they are trying to rescue me…then when they see that I am that lame all the time they just make fun of me. Anyway I am starting to really hate those big fish. (not really but they are starting to creep me out…I might try and get a job at Sea-World if this keeps up.)

Friday's Surf - A little dolphin Love

Friday will be another surf day...it won't be as big at the S facing spots as it has been over the last couple of days but I think it will be a bit more playful.

We are going to see a mix of fading S-SE tropical swell, slowly dropping SW energy, and building local NW windswell.

The average spots with some exposure to the swell mix will have waist-chest high surf with some shoulder high sets on the morning tide push.

Standout S facing spots, and the good combo breaks, will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets mixing in at times...I think the tide push will be particularly fun before too much water gets on top of things.

Winds will be very similar to the last couple of days with light/variable and clean conditions early. Afternoon winds build onshore around the 10-12+ knot range with some gusts around 15 knots at the more exposed breaks.

S-facing breaks will again be the best bet on Friday...but I think that thanks to the increasing windswell we are going to see a few more corners start to creep into the beach breaks...so while shape will still be best at the points/reefs, the beach breaks should improve and help to bleed off some of the crowd. I would plan on hitting it in the morning for the cleanest shape...but you may see better surfing around midmorning as the tide starts to shift around.

On another random session note...I seem to be having some issues with surfing this week. First off I get sick of going left all the freaking time during the summer...so I sit around doing voodoo dances trying to get some windswell to break it up, which so far has been failing miserably during this last set of swells. Second I try and roast myself by wearing a retarded amount of rubber into near 70 degree water. Now today to add insult to injury, during the lunch session, I basically get molested by a family of dolphins. I have to say that nothing makes you feel lamer than to get humped by dolphins. (really though I didn't actually get humped but I could totally tell that one wanted to...the freak.). I may just shoot photos tomorrow.

What part of "no" don't you understand Flipper! (I think this is the one that almost got me)
