Monday’s Waves – Fun but fading

Monday is looking like a surf day…and even though the swell mix will be backing down the winds look better than the last couple of mornings.

We are going to have a mix of NW swell (290-300), leftover Tropical SSW-SW (200-220), and some minor SW swell (200-210). Again even though it sounds like a lot of energy in the water it won’t mean a ton of surf hitting our beaches.

Wave heights tomorrow will average around chest-high+ range for most of the exposed areas but there may be a few bigger sets still mixing in on the decent combo breaks during the low tides. The standout spots, particularly NW facing breaks and the excellent combo spots, will be more consistently in the chest-shoulder high range…with a few of the best breaks seeing some shoulder-head high sets sneaking in at times.

Winds are looking ok…not quite decent…just sort of OK. Look for light and variable winds through the early morning and then increasing onshore bump creeping in by midmorning. W winds around 10-12 knots will start hitting through midmorning and will help hack things up as we move into the afternoon.

Overall with the winds threatening to hold off it looks like the Dawn Patrol will be your best bet, there will still be enough swell to have some fun, and the tides don’t look that horrible, but the shorter swell periods may mush things our as the tides peak throughout the day. I think that performance fish, and your solid thruster, could be good calls tomorrow. Personally I am going to keep an eye out the window watching the winds in the trees…if it stays slow, or shifts around, I am going to try and cut off the shackles holding me to the forecasting desk.

Here are the tides…good luck on the work week!

Waves for the Weekend – Fading but fun

We are going to have some surf this weekend...nothing special...but the water is warming up, there is some swell in the water, and the weather should be nice...which in my mind makes it a surf weekend.

Swellwise we will have some fading S-SW swell (180-210), dropping SE swell, and increasing NW windswell. Check out the sideways forecast...you can see the S-SW swell dropping out and more NW windswell coming in by Sunday/Monday.

Wave heights on Saturday will continue to hold around waist-chest high at the average spots. The standout S-SW facing spots, and the best combo breaks (mostly through OC and parts of SD), will be in the chest-shoulder high range. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few bigger sets at the standout S facing spots through the low-tide in the morning.

On Sunday the S facing spots will be smaller...the average spots will be backing down to waist high...the standout spots will back down into the chest high range. The better NW windswell/combo spots will be more consistently in the chest-high+ range.

Winds look decent for the weekend...slightly eddyish again...but manageable through the mornings. Both Saturday and Sunday will have variable to slightly S winds in the 5 knot range. W winds around 10-14 knots will build in through the afternoons.

Saturday Morning Winds

Sunday Morning Winds

Overall I think there will be a few playful waves this weekend. Again nothing super special...just fun, and fairly consistent thanks to the mix of swells. I actually expect the beach breaks to get a bit more workable on Sunday as the S-SW swells back off and the windswell fills in...the combo breaks could be a good call on that low-to-high tide push through midmorning. Tides will be an issue at times this weekend so try and pick spots that can work with the morning low tides.

Here are the tides...have a great weekend!

Thursday's Surf - still some fun ones out there

Thursday will be yet another surf day

Seriously how good has it been at the combo spots the last few days? Man I love Fall...I even put "I (heart) Fall" on my license plate frame. Well no, not really that would be weird. I actually have "my other car is a GOES Satellite with enhanced infrared imaging" which is waaaay more normal. Anyway enough about how cool I am...

This lovely little swell mix that we have had for the last couple of days will continue to push some waves into Thursday but will start to wind down just a touch. Mostly the SSW swell will drop off slowly while we get another small pulse of WNW swell to prop up the energy coming out of the North Pacific.

Most spots will see surf consistently in the waist high range, with some inconsistent chest high sets.

The standout combo breaks, mostly through Southern Ventura, The South Bay, Orange County and San Diego, will have surf more consistently in the chest high range with some shoulder high (and maybe even some shoulder high+ sets).

Winds look good again (they get a little funkier Friday and Saturday so enjoy them). Expect mostly light and variable, with a touch of onshore bump for Santa Barbara. Here check out the map.

Onshore winds build in through the afternoon...topping out around 12-15 knots out of the W around mid-afternoon.

I would probably plan on hitting up the combo beach breaks tomorrow. I think there will be plenty of waves spread out along the beaches so you might be able to find a peak for you and your friends. Points and Reefs will be a bit crossed up...still fun but not as lined up as you would get on a "pure" swell. I would try to get on it in the morning...the winds start to shift around pretty early Thursday and could junk things up for the afternoon.

Random Heads Up...I am seeing some signs of Santa Ana type conditions setting up later in the weekend (Sunday night into Monday). This is still a few days but if it can combo up with some tropical swell and some WNW energy we could have a fun couple of days next week. I will keep you posted as we get closer.
