Waves for Wednesday – Eddy Eddy go away

Wednesday will be a surf day...but there still may be some lingering S winds for some areas that will hamper shape.

We are going to see a mix of mostly S-SW swell (180-210) coming in from the Southern Hemi, some background NW windswell, and some very weak tropical SE swell (155-160) from TS Blanca.

Wave heights are going to hold around knee-waist high for most of the average exposed areas...expect slow mushy shape for many spots as the tide fills in through midday. Top S facing spots and the excellent combo breaks (mostly through Orange County and parts of San Diego) will have some waist-chest high waves with some rare bigger sets.

Winds are where we might have issues again...the stupid eddy spun up over Tuesday night and did a good job tweaking a lot of spots (and wrecking my wind forecast for Wednesday...yeah thanks a lot). Current forecasts are calling for light/variable to light s-wind early tomorrow...but I am still a bit leery that the eddy might increase overnight. Expect some texture/crumble to the more open beaches...and cleaner conditions at spots that like the more southerly flow. W-WSW winds 10-14 knots will return by the afternoon.

I would still plan on trying to surf early tomorrow, mostly due to the low tides, but try and keep an eye on the wind...you might even want to give it a check on the computer in the AM before hopping in the car...you probably won’t have to wait to be able to see on the surf cams...but you might want to check a live wind site just to see if the eddy is spinning. Anyway I hope that I am being pessimistic about the wind...I would like to surf some cleaner waves tomorrow.

Here are the tides...

11:28AM LDT 3.6 H
04:08PM LDT 2.3 L

Monday’s Surf – Some size but with an eddy-monkey on its back

Monday will be a surf day…but you are going to want pick spots that have exposure to the SW swell and protection from the S eddy winds…you may have a compromise a bit of size for cleaner shape and conditions.

Surfwise we will have a mix of building SW swell (that was already showing some new energy on Sunday…check out the Oceanside buoy is has a nice bump of SW energy in the 18-20 second period band (hellooooo SW swell.)

Along with the SW swell we will continue to have some background WNW windswell energy.

The average spots will see surf in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets. Standout breaks, mostly in South Orange County, Northern San Diego and at a few other spots in the other regions, will have surf consistently in the shoulder-head high range with overhead+ sets coming through at times. The tides will still tweak size a bit…the dropping tide will drain out the size and consistency while the building tide will send more larger sets before it starts to mush it out as it peaks.

Winds will be the biggest issue. I was a bit bummed on how strong the eddy spun up on Saturday…it was down-right lame in a few spots for the morning…Sunday was better but it still had the june-gloom eddy creeping around the edges at times. Monday will be pretty similar…the forecast models are actually showing a bit more S wind than Sunday so I think that if you plan accordingly you will be able to find a few decent spots.

Your best bet is going to be areas that can combo up the mix of stronger SW swell, the smaller WNW windswell, but still have enough protection to manage the S winds. Parts of the South Bay, Parts of Central Ventura, Central Orange County (Dana Point/Laguna), and La Jolla (down in San Diego)…all do better in these kinds of conditions. I would generally start your search in those areas. Personally I might still make a cam and wind check in the morning (my wind check is looking at the trees outside my house…not that I am that close to the beach…but it at least gives me the general feel of the day…I know, I know…aren’t I scientific?)

Monday’s Surf - Can’t get a break…

Monday will be similar to the weekend…There will be surf but it will continue to have some issues with eddy conditions.

This weekend was a bit of a bust, at least in my area (North OC). The winds never really cleaned up and the swell was showing on Sunday but didn’t push up much on Saturday. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few waves and it was surfable enough for a weekend…I guess I am still a bit jaded by that excellent run of surf we had in Feb/March. I hope that you have a few more cleaner pockets than I had.

Anyway on to Monday.

Surfwise on Monday we will have a mix of peaking S swell and some local windswell. Most spots will continue to see chest high surf while the standout S facing areas in Orange County see some shoulder high+ sets.

Conditions will be a bit funky again…with eddy S winds around 5 knots through the morning and onshore winds out of the W-WNW around 10-12 knots by the afternoon.

It will be rideable and if you can find a semi-protected spot you might even find a clean little section…but in general expect some of that texture/crumble to most spots. Best shape/conditions will be around early to mid morning…onshore winds will strengthen through the afternoon.
