Sewage Spill - Avoid Doheny for a while…

I read on the news, and heard from a couple of you guys, that there was a pretty big sewage spill that got dumped into the Tijeras Creek that sometimes flows into Doheny State beach. It sounds like the spill happened a couple of days ago…but I am sure that the closure will be around for a bit.

This is what I read on the Orange County Local News…

“A 24-inch iron sewage line belonging to the Santa Margarita Water District ruptured Tuesday afternoon and sent some 500,000 gallons of untreated sewage into Tijeras Creek, which empties into the ocean at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point.”

500,000 gallons…man that is just nasty, talk about poo water.

Speaking of that…check out this shirt…I think that Kevin’s since of humor fits pretty well with the closure...and hits a little close to home at the same time.

Thursday’s Surf – Cleaner with more swell filling in

Thursday will be a surf day…if you don’t mind a little run-off leftover from Wednesday.

We will also have a new WNW-NW swell (285-300) that will be filling in throughout the day. The new swell will be showing up in Santa Barbara and Ventura in the morning…with some new energy starting to show in the other counties further south as well, just not as big…but the peak of the swell looks like it will arrive around mid-afternoon.

Sizewise the average W-WNW facing breaks will be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high and shoulder high+ sets at times at the better WNW exposed spots. The standout NW breaks will be running in the chest-head high range pretty consistently but as the tide drops into the afternoon I think that the best spots, particularly the breaks that like the shorter-period (10-13 second energy), will have some sets going a couple of feet overhead.

Winds and weather look a lot better tomorrow…this front is supposed to move out tonight setting up clear or partly clear skies tomorrow and light/variable to light offshore winds in the morning. NW winds around 10-14 knots will push through in the afternoon.

Overall it looks like a big improvement in size and conditions over Wednesday…water quality will not be great, some areas are seeing some pretty significant rainfall today…but it isn’t the first rain of the season so it probably isn’t the total toilet flush that it could have been. There will still be some tide problems in the morning as we see another winter-morning high tide…so if you plan to surf early make sure to check spots that can handle some extra water.

Here are the tides…Happy New Year’s Eve

Tuesday’s Surf – Don’t drink the brown water

So Tuesday is sort of actually looking a little surfable.

It won’t be super clean…and shape won’t be all that great…and the water quality is going to be unhealthy…but it does look like winds are going to lay down tonight and there should be plenty of swell leftover.

We are going to have a mix of W-NW wind/storm/short-period energy (270-300) and some longer-period WNW swell (290+) on Tuesday. Most W facing spots will be in the chest-shoulder high range tomorrow morning while the standout spots see some head high and potentially bigger sets through the morning (but a lot is going to depend on how much windswell holds overnight).

Right now it looks like winds are going to back off. The storm is passing through and a nice solid lump of cold air is moving over socal. It looks like that temp drop is going to help to push off the trailing portion of this storm and set up light/variable to even light offshore winds for most areas tomorrow morning. NW winds will get back on the horse pretty quickly through midday but there should at least be a window of better winds through the morning.

I would stick to the standout winter spots, like those in SD or Ventura, if you are looking for big waves tomorrow. The WNW’er is going to be driving a lot of the excess size but it is coming in from a bit of a steeper angle which means not every spots is going to be exposed. Stick with the top winter breaks and you should see plenty of size. Other lesser exposed breaks will be more windswelly, and tide/wind sensitive…but should still be playful despite the smaller sizes. As usual with as much rain as we had the water is going to be poo-tacular so if you get the bird-flu easy or have kids at home you might want to skip the turd lineup for a couple of days.

Here are the tides…I should be back on a more normal update schedule by tomorrow afternoon. Oh and we have just a single low and high tomorrow. Plan on the tide being high through the evening.
